UL 924 Requirements
UL 924 requirements are set into place for your safety protection and the safety protection of others. UL code compliant Exit Signs must match all requirements that have been put in place by UL 924. At one time almost all Exit Sign Lettering was red in color. Nowadays, Exit Sign Lettering is either red or green. Both Red and Green Lettering are code compliant as far as the UL goes. However, you may want to check if the City or State of your business has any specific color code requirements or mandates. New York would be one. Exit Sign letters must be a minimum of 6" high and stroke must be 3/4" and space between letters must be 3/8". If you have a bigger sign, that letters must adjust accordingly so that it is proportional and easy to see from a distance. 0.06 foot lamberts are the specified minimum luminance by UL 924 and NFPA 101. This was established in the 1970's. UL conducts testing on Exit Signs based on 100 foot viewing distance specified by the NFPA. If viewing distance is 50 or 75 feet, that needs to be specified on the Exit Sign. Self-Luminous Tritium Gas Exit Signs must have a visible expiration date. This is required. Exit Sign Warehouse has all UL listed products and is your one stop shop for code compliant exit signs.
